A King's Arsenal
In 1752, a village headman named Alaungpaya began a campaign to unify Burma, establishing the Konbaung Dynasty with Shwebo as his capital. To achieve his military goals, which included campaigns against the neighboring kingdom of Siam, he required a powerful and modern arsenal. This need sparked a period of intense metallurgical development centered in his new royal city. The dynasty's weapon-making enterprise combined local craftsmanship with foreign expertise to produce large quantities of bronze cannons and iron firearms.
Alaungpaya's forces integrated foreign soldiers, including captured French and Portuguese troops, who brought their technical knowledge of artillery. Records indicate that captured French cannoneers became the leaders of the Burmese artillery corps in the latter half of the 18th century. This influx of expertise was significant, as earlier accounts noted that Burmese armies often lacked skilled cannoneers despite possessing cannons. The British East India Company also supplied Alaungpaya with guns and light cannon, hoping to gain a trade advantage in a stabilized region. By the First Anglo-Burmese War in 1824, an average of 60 percent of Konbaung soldiers were equipped with firearms, a significant increase from previous centuries.
Alloys and Methods
The bronze cannons of the Alaungpaya period combine different technological traditions. Bronze, an alloy of copper and tin, produces a much sturdier cannon barrel than cast iron, which is more prone to cracking under pressure. The Burmese casters produced highly decorative pieces, with some surviving examples from 1790 cast in the form of dragons.
The casting methods likely drew from long-established Chinese techniques. Chinese bronze casting, dating back to at least 1700 BCE, traditionally used a piece-mold process. This involved creating a clay model of the object, which was then covered in another layer of clay. This outer layer was cut into sections, removed, and fired to create a durable mold. The original model was then shaved down to act as a core, the mold was reassembled around it, and molten bronze was poured into the gap. This method allowed for complex surface decoration to be carved directly into the mold pieces. The presence of European advisors suggests a parallel introduction of their casting and boring techniques, creating a hybrid manufacturing process unique to the region. The weapons produced were functional and symbolized the dynasty's power, combining advanced military technology with traditional Burmese artistic styles.
