An otherworldly forest
The Dragon's Blood Forest is a concentration of the endemic Dracaena cinnabari trees, found primarily on the high, misty plateaus of Socotra Island. This isolated landmass separated from the Gondwana supercontinent millions of years ago, allowing its flora and fauna to evolve independently. The island is a block of Precambrian rock, with a granite mountain range called the Hajhir Mountains rising to 1,500 meters, surrounded by limestone plateaus. This unique geology and long isolation have resulted in extreme levels of endemism: 37% of its 825 plant species, 90% of its reptiles, and 95% of its land snails exist only here.
The forest’s signature species, the dragon's blood tree, is a monocot, related to asparagus and agave than to typical trees. Unlike most monocots, it undergoes a rare form of secondary growth, allowing its trunk to thicken over time and creating growth zones that resemble tree rings. This "dracoid habitus" growth pattern results in a dense, upturned crown shaped like an umbrella. This shape is an adaptation to the arid climate. The large canopy captures moisture from seasonal mists, which then drips down to the tree's base, and it also provides shade to reduce evaporation and aid the survival of seedlings. The trees are slow-growing, reaching heights of 10 to 12 meters, and can live for hundreds of years.
Resin, rituals, and risk
The tree takes its name from its famous crimson sap, a resin known as "dragon's blood". When the bark is cut, the red resin seeps out and hardens. This substance has been a valuable commodity since at least the 1st century CE. Ancient Romans, Greeks, and Arabs used it as a pigment, a dye, and for medicinal purposes, particularly for respiratory and gastrointestinal issues. The resin contains high levels of antioxidant flavonoids and proanthocyanidins. In later centuries, it was used as a red varnish for violins, including those made by Stradivarius, and in photoengraving.
Today, the Dragon's Blood Forest faces significant threats. The species is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Climate change is altering the monsoon patterns that deliver essential moisture, with projections suggesting the tree's habitat could shrink by 45% by 2080. Overgrazing by goats is another major problem, as young seedlings are often eaten before they can mature. The current population of over 80,000 trees consists mainly of older individuals, with very little natural regeneration occurring. Local and international conservation efforts are underway, focusing on building enclosures to protect young saplings from livestock and establishing nurseries to cultivate new trees.
