A city built for a supergiant deposit
Sewell exists because of the geology beneath it. The town provided housing for workers at El Teniente, the world's largest underground copper mine. This massive ore body is a porphyry copper deposit, a type formed when hot, metal-rich fluids from a magma chamber intrude into a host rock. Molybdenum is also found in association with the copper ores. The specific formation is a "breccia pipe," a vertical, cylindrical body of shattered rock caused by volcanic activity.
This geological structure, located on the slopes of the Cerro Negro in the Andes, concentrates copper minerals in a defined area. The El Teniente mine contains more than 3,000 kilometers of underground galleries, shows the scale of the deposit. The town itself was built between 2,000 and 2,250 meters (7,220 and 7,380 feet) above sea level, located on the steep mountainside directly above the mine it served. Construction began in 1905 after the American-owned Braden Copper Company was authorized to exploit the mine. The location was entirely dictated by the industrial process; the industrial installations were designed to use the hillside's incline for the mineral grinding process.
Engineering a vertical city
The extreme topography of Sewell made conventional urban design impossible. The town was constructed on terrain too steep for wheeled vehicles, leading to its most distinctive feature: a complete reliance on staircases for circulation. This earned it the nickname "The City of Stairs" ("Ciudad de las Escaleras"). A large central staircase, the Escalera Central, forms the main axis, running up from the railway station. A series of smaller stairs and pathways branch off, connecting the different levels of the town.
The buildings are primarily made of timber, much of it imported from the United States, and are often painted in bright greens, yellows, reds, and blues. The architecture shows an American design influence, with many residential buildings based on 19th-century styles, while some later structures like the industrial school (1936) are a more modernist approach. At its peak population in the 1960s, Sewell had over 15,000 people. The town included a hospital, social clubs, a cinema, and a heated swimming pool. A narrow-gauge railway, completed in 1911, was the sole connection to the city of Rancagua, 60 kilometers away, and was used to transport all supplies and people. The entire settlement is functional engineering, adapted to a hostile environment with heavy snowfall and avalanche risk.
