A landscape dissolved by water
The dramatic limestone towers of Satun Geopark are the product of a slow, persistent geological process called chemical weathering. This entire region is built upon a thick platform of calcium carbonate rock, originally formed on an ancient seabed. For millions of years, rainwater, made slightly acidic by absorbing atmospheric carbon dioxide, has infiltrated and dissolved this rock. The process creates a distinctive area known as karst topography.
In Satun, this process is accelerated by the tropical climate. Heavy monsoon rains and dense jungle vegetation create an environment rich in carbonic acid, which relentlessly eats away at the limestone. The spires and sea stacks seen today are the resilient remnants of a once-solid plateau. Features like Prasat Hin Panyod ("Thousand Spired Stone Castle") are examples of pinnacle karst. This specific formation is a collapsed sinkhole, or doline, that can now only be entered by kayak through a sea cave, revealing a hidden world of sharp, rain-sculpted peaks. The geology here is a continuous record from the Cambrian to the Permian periods, offering a rare, unbroken record of deep time. The highest peaks in the geopark reach an altitude of 732 meters.
A library of ancient life
The limestone itself is a record of prehistoric life. Much of the geopark is known as the "Land of Palaeozoic Fossils" because its rocks contain a continuous and diverse record of life from over 500 million years ago. These were not dinosaurs, but the much older creatures of Earth's early oceans. The rock layers contain abundant fossils of trilobites, brachiopods, nautiloids, and stromatolites.
The oldest fossils in the entire Thai-Malay Peninsula are Cambrian-era trilobites found on Tarutao Island within the geopark. At another site, Khao Noi, geologists can observe the precise stratigraphic boundary between the Ordovician and Silurian periods, a reference point for the global geological timescale. Some fossil beds are interspersed with layers of volcanic ash, which allows for absolute dating of the fossil specimens. These discoveries show that this part of Thailand was once a shallow sea on the edge of the supercontinent Gondwana, located much farther south than it is today.
