A National Bird Vanishes
The crested ibis, Nipponia nippon, is so integral to Japan that its scientific name means "Japan's Japan." Historically, these birds graced wetlands across East Asia. But in Japan, a combination of factors led to their collapse. After the Meiji Restoration in 1868, restrictions on hunting were lifted, and the ibis's feathers became a popular export for items like feather dusters in Europe. This pressure, combined with habitat loss from deforestation and the introduction of agricultural pesticides after World War II, decimated their food sources like loaches and frogs.
By the 1930s, the ibis was a rare sight. In 1981, the last five wild crested ibises in Japan were captured on Sado Island to begin a desperate captive breeding program. This effort failed. The last native-born Japanese ibis, a female named Kin, died in captivity in 2003 at the age of 36, officially marking the extinction of the original Japanese lineage.
A Genetic Lifeline
Just as Japan's ibis population vanished, a tiny group of seven birds was discovered in China's Shaanxi Province in 1981. This discovery provided a second chance. Through international cooperation, China loaned a pair of ibises, named You You and Yang Yang, to Japan in 1999. These birds, and subsequent arrivals from China, became the founders of a new population at the Sado Japanese Crested Ibis Conservation Center. The first successful captive breeding occurred that same year.
The entire population of crested ibis in Japan today descends from this small group of Chinese founders. This created an extreme population bottleneck, a sharp reduction in genetic variation that can have long-term consequences for a species' health and adaptability. Scientists at the conservation center must manage the population's genetics as carefully as they manage their diet and habitat.
Using microsatellite markers, researchers track the genetic diversity of the captive population. Their analysis shows that while overall diversity is low, as expected from so few founders, the planned mating program has successfully preserved the founders' alleles and minimized kinship between breeding pairs. This intensive genetic management gives the new population the best possible chance of long-term survival. The first group of ten captive-raised birds was released into the wild on Sado Island in 2008. By 2016, for the first time in 42 years, chicks from parents who were themselves born in the wild successfully fledged.
