A coastal record in shells
Along the shoreline of Myanmar's Rakhine State, large mounds composed almost entirely of shells document the lives of coastal communities over millennia. These features are shell middens—accumulations of discarded food waste left by people who relied on the sea for sustenance. These are structured archaeological records; they are archaeological records. Within the layers of shells, archaeologists can find discarded tools, pottery, and the bones of other animals that were part of the local diet.
The formation of the Rakhine middens corresponds with a dynamic period in Earth's recent geological past. Around 6,000 years ago, during the mid-Holocene epoch, global sea levels were slightly higher than they are today. The people living along the ancient coastlines of the Bay of Bengal harvested mollusks and other marine life, depositing the empty shells at their processing or habitation sites. As thousands of years passed, these deposits grew into substantial mounds, preserving a long-term history of human activity and diet in a single location. Many similar prehistoric coastal sites around the world have been lost to erosion or are now underwater, making the Rakhine examples a record of the past.
Reading environmental change
The scientific value of the Rakhine shell middens comes from their stratigraphy—the distinct layers that build up over time. By excavating a cross-section of a mound, scientists can analyze the contents of each layer, from oldest at the bottom to youngest at the top. An important line of evidence is the species of mollusk found in each layer. The species composition shows the local marine environment at the time of deposition.
During the mid-Holocene sea-level highstand, the coastline was further inland. The middens from this period would likely contain mollusk species that thrive in fully marine, open-coast conditions. As sea levels gradually fell over the next few thousand years, the coastline would have built outwards, a process called progradation. This process creates new habitats like sheltered bays, tidal mudflats, and brackish estuaries.
This environmental shift is recorded in the shells. Higher, more recent layers in the middens might show a decrease in open-coast species and an increase in mudflat and mangrove dwellers, such as certain types of ark shells (Anadara), marsh clams (Polymesoda), or oysters (Saccostrea). This change in the "menu" shows that people were not static; they continuously adapted their foraging strategies to the changing world around them, exploiting the most productive and accessible resources as the shoreline itself evolved.
