An elaborate insect trap
The Nodding Greenhood (Pterostylis nutans) has a method for achieving pollination. It employs a touch-sensitive, trap-flower mechanism specifically targeting male fungus gnats, often from the Mycetophilidae family. The orchid's flower emits chemical signals, or kairomones, that mimic the sex pheromones of female fungus gnats. The scent is produced exclusively by the labellum, the flower's modified petal that is a landing platform.
When a male gnat lands on the curved, hairy labellum, its weight and movement trigger a sensitive mechanism. In a fraction of a second, the labellum snaps upward, throwing the insect into the hooded part of the flower, known as the galea. Trapped inside, the gnat's only escape is through a narrow passage formed by the plant's reproductive structures. As it squeezes through this exit, it first passes the stigma, where any pollen it carries from a previously visited flower is deposited. It then passes the pollinarium, where a new packet of pollen is glued to its body, ready to be carried to the next Nodding Greenhood it visits. This entire process ensures specific and efficient cross-pollination.
The flower itself is a single, translucent bloom with green and sometimes brownish stripes, borne on a stalk that can reach up to 30 centimeters high. Its "nodding" posture gives the species its scientific name; nutans is Latin for "nodding". The flower is typically 18–25 mm long and 10–14 mm wide. The labellum, which acts as the trap door, is a curved structure about 14–18 mm long, covered in short, bristly hairs.
A life dependent on fungi
The Nodding Greenhood's life cycle is linked with microscopic fungi in the soil. Like all orchids, it relies on a symbiotic relationship with mycorrhizal fungi to survive. Its seeds are minuscule and lack the energy reserves needed for germination. They depend entirely on fungi, particularly species from the Ceratobasidium genus, to provide the necessary carbon and nutrients in their early development. This relationship is important for the orchid's entire life.
Pterostylis nutans is a terrestrial, deciduous orchid. After its flowering period, which can occur from March to December, the above-ground parts of the plant die back, and it retreats into a subterranean tuber. This tuber allows the plant to survive the dry summer months in a dormant state. The plant re-emerges from late summer to autumn, first developing a basal rosette of three to six dark green, egg-shaped leaves. These leaves, which have wavy edges, gather energy for the plant to produce its single flower. This orchid is endemic to eastern Australia, commonly found in moist, sheltered areas within forests and coastal scrub. It often forms extensive colonies, with dozens of plants carpeting the forest floor. The species was first formally described in 1810 by the botanist Robert Brown, based on a specimen he collected near Port Jackson, now Sydney.
