A world without left or right
In Pormpuraaw, a remote Aboriginal community on the western edge of Cape York, the Kuuk Thaayorre people navigate their world without words for "left" or "right". Instead of this body-relative (or egocentric) system, their language relies exclusively on an absolute frame of reference: the cardinal directions. This linguistic requirement means a speaker must be constantly oriented in space. To say hello in Kuuk Thaayorre, one asks, "Where are you going?", and a typical response might be, "South-southeast, in the middle distance." You cannot get past a basic greeting without knowing your precise heading.
This constant spatial awareness is instilled from a very young age. This is not a special skill, but a direct consequence of the language's structure. Speakers must use terms like north, south, east, and west for all spatial descriptions, from "There's an ant on your southwest leg" to "Move that cup to the north-northwest". Researchers have observed that speakers of such languages, including young children, possess a remarkably accurate mental compass, able to point to cardinal directions with precision even inside unfamiliar buildings. This linguistic framework produced a different way of existing in, and thinking about, space.
Arranging time on the land
Cognitive scientist Lera Boroditsky and linguist Alice Gaby investigated how this spatial language might affect abstract concepts, specifically the concept of time. They conducted an experiment with Kuuk Thaayorre speakers, giving them sets of pictures that showed a temporal progression: a man aging, a banana being eaten, or a crocodile growing. The task was to arrange the shuffled cards on the ground to show the correct order of events.
For English speakers, the timeline is almost invariably arranged from left to right, an orientation borrowed from the direction of writing. The Kuuk Thaayorre speakers, however, consistently arranged the cards so that time flowed from east to west. This arrangement was not relative to their bodies. When a person was seated facing south, their timeline ran left to right. When they faced north, it ran right to left. When facing east, time flowed toward the body; when facing west, it moved away. The timeline was locked to the land, following the path of the sun, entirely independent of the individual's orientation. This research, published in 2010, shows that fundamental concepts like time can be understood in dramatically different ways, shaped by the language we use to describe space.
