The anatomy of a tower karst
The dramatic limestone towers of Phou Hin Poun are a example of a landform called tower karst, or fencong. Their story begins in the Permo-Carboniferous period, over 300 million years ago, when the region was a shallow sea accumulating immense deposits of sediment that would become limestone. The process that shapes them today results from geology and climate. The limestone bedrock is heavily fractured with near-vertical joints. In Laos' tropical savanna climate, heavy monsoon rains absorb carbon dioxide from the air and soil, forming a weak carbonic acid.
This acidic water percolates down through the fractures, dissolving the rock in a process of chemical weathering. Over millions of years, these joints widen into deep gorges and sinkholes, isolating entire blocks of more resistant limestone. As the surrounding valleys deepen, these blocks are left standing as towers. The consistent slope of their sides is not a coincidence; it represents a geomorphological equilibrium. The angle is the result of the constant interplay between chemical dissolution weakening the rock face and the force of gravity causing debris to fall. This balance between chemical decay and physical collapse produces the towers' uniform inclines across the landscape.
A biological ark on stone pillars
The geology of Phou Hin Poun directly shapes its biology. The rugged, isolated terrain creates a mosaic of microhabitats that supports high biodiversity. The Phou Hin Poun National Biodiversity Conservation Area hosts 113 species of mammal, 160 species of bird, and 81 species of reptile. The forests on and between the towers shelter rare primates like the François' langur and the Assam macaque.
The most famous resident is the Laotian rock rat, Laonastes aenigmamus. When scientists first described it in 2005, they believed it was so unique it belonged to a completely new family of mammals. Later analysis revealed it was the last surviving member of a family called the Diatomyidae, thought to have gone extinct 11 million years ago. The animal is a survivor, finding refuge in the ancient karst landscape. The area's extensive cave systems also harbor remarkable life. The protected area has 41 known species of bats; a single cave, Tam Houay Si, is used by 22 of them.
