Winter worm, summer grass
High in the alpine meadows of the Tibetan Plateau, between 3,000 and 5,000 meters, a strange biological drama unfolds underground. It involves a parasitic fungus, Ophiocordyceps sinensis, and the larvae of ghost moths from the genus Thitarodes. The life cycle begins when fungal spores infect a moth larva living underground, where it feeds on plant roots. The fungus germinates inside the living host, slowly replacing the larva's tissue with its own mycelium. This process kills and mummifies the larva, leaving its exoskeleton intact. After overwintering, a dark, stalk-like fruiting body, or stroma, erupts from the dead larva's head and pushes up through the soil. This entire fungus-larva combination is known in Tibetan as yartsa gunbu, which translates to "winter worm, summer grass," and has been used in traditional medicine for centuries.
The fungus contains several bioactive compounds, including cordycepin, adenosine, and various polysaccharides. Traditional Chinese Medicine, where it was first recorded in the 18th century, values it as a tonic believed to treat a range of ailments from fatigue to respiratory problems. Its reputation grew internationally after 1993, when Chinese athletes, who reportedly used it in their diet, broke several world records in track and field. The fungus's high value is also tied to its use as a status symbol.
A precarious gold rush
The demand for Ophiocordyceps sinensis has created a modern-day gold rush on the Tibetan Plateau. Top-quality specimens have fetched prices higher than gold by weight, with some reports citing retail prices over $50,000 per pound ($140,000 per kilogram) in recent years. This trade has a significant economic impact on local communities; in some parts of rural Tibet, harvesting the fungus can account for 40-80% of a family's annual cash income. The total annual production across the Tibetan Plateau is estimated to be between 80 and 175 tons.
This intense economic pressure has led to widespread overharvesting. The IUCN has classified the fungus as Vulnerable, and researchers have noted population declines of over 30% in some areas. The harvesting itself, which occurs in a short window from May to June, can damage the fragile alpine meadow ecosystem. Climate change presents another threat, as warming winters may disrupt the fungus's life cycle. Attempts at commercial cultivation have proven difficult, failing to replicate the unique chemical profile of the wild fungus, which means the pressure on wild populations remains high. As a result, China has regulated its sale since 2016 due to concerns about sustainability and the potential for heavy metal contamination in wild specimens.
