A blizzard of new life
Each year in March or April, the 300-kilometer-long Ningaloo Reef puts on a spectacular reproductive display. For a few nights, typically seven to ten days after the full moon, over 200 species of coral simultaneously release their gametes into the water. The event transforms the sea into an underwater blizzard of tiny pink and orange egg-and-sperm bundles. This mass spawning is a way of overwhelming predators through sheer numbers, ensuring enough gametes survive to fertilize and create the next generation of coral.
The coordination depends on a precise set of environmental triggers. The first is a rise in water temperature, with the ideal temperature around 27°C (80.6°F), which stimulates the maturation of the gametes over several months. The second is the lunar cycle. Corals, though lacking eyes, can sense moonlight. Studies on the coral Acropora millepora identified the presence of ancient blue-light-sensing photoreceptors called cryptochromes. These light-sensitive proteins, specifically one called Cry2, are stimulated by the faint blue light of the moon, helping to synchronize the final release. The final cue is the time of sunset; spawning begins hours after dark, protecting the gametes from diurnal predators.
Once released, the buoyant, lipid-filled bundles float to the surface where they break apart, allowing cross-fertilization between different colonies. This mixing of genes is important for maintaining genetic diversity. The fertilized eggs develop into free-swimming larvae called planulae. These planulae drift with the ocean currents for days or even weeks before settling on the seafloor, where they metamorphose and establish new coral colonies, growing at a slow rate of about 1 cm per year.
A feast for giants
The annual spawning event creates a massive food pulse in the marine ecosystem, attracting a host of other animals. The sudden abundance of plankton and krill, which feed on the coral gametes, draws in some of the ocean's largest filter feeders. This makes the post-spawning period one of the most reliable times and places in the world to encounter whale sharks (Rhincodon typus). These gentle giants, the largest fish in the sea, gather at Ningaloo to feast on the nutrient-rich soup. Whale sharks can grow up to 18 meters long, and their mouths, which can be 1.5 meters wide, are perfectly adapted to filter the tiny organisms from the water.
The influx of whale sharks is a major attraction, and they are not the only large visitors. Manta rays also congregate to feed on the plankton blooms. The entire food web benefits, from small reef fish that consume the gametes directly to larger predators drawn by the concentration of life. This synchronized reproductive pulse supports the health and biodiversity of the entire Ningaloo Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
