A high-pressure birth
The jadeite of Hpakant, considered the highest quality in the world, owes its existence to a rare geological environment. It forms exclusively in subduction zones, where one tectonic plate forces another into the Earth's mantle. In this case, the Indian Plate is sliding beneath the Eurasian Plate. This process creates conditions of intense pressure—between 1.5 and 3.5 gigapascals—but at relatively low temperatures. These are the specific "blueschist facies" metamorphic conditions necessary for the mineral jadeite, a sodium aluminum pyroxene (NaAlSi₂O₆), to crystallize.
The parent rocks are serpentinized peridotites, originally part of the upper mantle, which become infused with sodium- and aluminum-rich fluids released by the subducting oceanic crust. These fluids move through fractures in the rock, depositing veins of jadeite. The most coveted variety, "imperial jade," gets its intense emerald-green color from trace amounts of chromium in its crystal structure. Other colors, like lavender, are caused by manganese and iron. While primary deposits exist within the host rock, most commercially mined jadeite in Hpakant is found in secondary alluvial deposits—as boulders and pebbles in the Uru River's vast conglomerate beds. These boulders are often covered with a weathered brown "skin" that conceals the color and quality of the stone inside.
From mine to market
The Hpakant region in Kachin State is the world's most important source of gem-quality jadeite, producing over 70% of the world's supply. The area's mineral wealth only became a major commodity after its discovery by Chinese traders. Jadeite began to reach China in significant quantities during the Qing Dynasty (1644–1912), and its popularity surged under the Qianlong Emperor, who reigned from 1735 to 1796.
Another unique chromium-rich rock found only in this area is Maw-sit-sit. First identified by Swiss gemologist Eduard J. Gübelin in the 1960s, it is not a mineral but a rock composed of multiple minerals, including kosmochlor, chromian jadeite, and chromian albite. Its brilliant green and black patches are due to its main component, kosmochlor (NaCrSi₂O₆). The mining industry in Hpakant is dangerous and secretive, with an estimated value of around $31 billion in 2014 alone, a significant portion of which is smuggled across the border into China. The area is dominated by massive open-pit mines and unstable tailings piles, which frequently lead to deadly landslides.
