A tale of two populations
Myanmar presents a unique demographic situation for the Asian elephant, Elephas maximus. The country's wild population has declined significantly, with current estimates suggesting only 1,500 to 2,000 individuals remain, threatened by habitat loss and poaching for skin and body parts. By contrast, Myanmar also has the world's largest semi-captive elephant population, numbering over 5,000 animals.
This massive cohort of working animals is primarily managed by the state-owned Myanma Timber Enterprise (MTE). For over a century, these elephants have been essential to the logging industry, using their strength to haul teak and other hardwoods from rugged, mountainous terrain where vehicles cannot easily operate. This system of selective logging with elephants is considered less damaging to the surrounding forest than mechanized methods that require clearing wide paths. The elephants work a regulated schedule, typically five to eight hours per day, and are cared for by handlers known as oozies. After their workday, the animals are released into the forest overnight to forage, interact, and even breed with both other captive elephants and their wild counterparts, creating a unique semi-wild dynamic.
A living laboratory
The Myanma Timber Enterprise maintains meticulous, handwritten logbooks for every government-owned elephant—a practice inherited from the British colonial era. Each elephant has a unique registration number and a corresponding logbook detailing its parentage, birth date, work history, health checks, and medical treatments. The system has created one of the most extensive and detailed multigenerational datasets for any long-lived mammal on Earth.
Scientists from institutions like the University of Sheffield and the University of Turku have digitized and analyzed these records, learning about elephant biology. The data from 5,150 elephants, some records stretching back to 1925, has enabled deep analysis of lifespan, fertility, and the effects of environmental stress. Studies show that the median lifespan for these working elephants is around 42 years, significantly longer than the 19-year median for Asian elephants in European zoos. Research has also revealed the long-term costs of bringing elephants into captivity; wild-caught elephants have a median lifespan that is three to seven years shorter than those born into the MTE system. Further analysis has pinpointed specific vulnerabilities, such as a spike in mortality risk around age four, which corresponds to the stressful taming process. This vast repository of information is now being supplemented with genomic studies to guide conservation and ensure the genetic health of this unique population.
