A Temple for Technology
The Musée des Arts et Métiers occupies a site layered with history, inside the former Benedictine priory of Saint-Martin-des-Champs. First established around 1060, the priory grew into a major monastic complex. The surviving church, with its early Gothic choir completed around 1135 and a 13th-century nave, is a medieval architectural landmark. During the French Revolution, the priory was suppressed and its buildings were repurposed. In 1794, on the initiative of Henri Grégoire, the site was designated as the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers—a "store of new and useful inventions" intended to preserve and show French technological ingenuity. The church itself became a "temple of industry," housing the collection that opened to the public in 1802.
Today the museum's collection holds over 80,000 objects and 15,000 drawings, with about 2,400 items on display. The exhibits are organized into seven categories: Scientific Instruments, Materials, Construction, Communication, Energy, Mechanics, and Transport.
Core Exhibits: Rotation, Calculation, and Flight
Suspended within the church's choir is a Foucault pendulum, demonstrating the Earth's rotation. In 1851, French physicist Léon Foucault conducted his famous experiment at the Panthéon in Paris, using a 28 kg bob on a 67-meter wire to make the planet's spin visible. The pendulum currently at the museum is the one used at the 1855 Universal Exhibition. Its 25 kg sphere hangs from an 18-meter steel wire, and its plane of oscillation appears to complete a full rotation in just under 32 hours at this latitude. The original bob from the Panthéon experiment was damaged in 2010 when its cable snapped, and it is now displayed in a separate case.
The museum has one of the world's first mechanical calculators, the Pascaline. Blaise Pascal invented the device in 1642 at the age of 19 to assist his father, a tax supervisor. After three years and fifty prototypes, he presented a finished machine capable of addition and subtraction. Eight of Pascal's original machines are known to survive.
Hanging in the main nave is Clément Ader's Avion III. Built between 1892 and 1897 with funding from the French War Office, this steam-powered, bat-winged aircraft was an early attempt at a "heavier-than-air" flying machine. During a test in October 1897, the machine left wheel tracks that disappeared for approximately 300 meters, evidence that it achieved lift before a crosswind sent it off the track. The government suspended funding, but Ader donated the Avion III to the museum in 1902. Also on display is the complete laboratory of Antoine-Laurent de Lavoisier, the 18th-century chemist who identified oxygen and established the law of conservation of mass. His wife preserved the instruments after he was guillotined in 1794.
