The Sculpting Wind
Marado, a 0.3-square-kilometer island, marks the southernmost point of South Korea, lying 11 kilometers off Jeju's coast. This position exposes it to persistent and powerful sea winds, a dominant environmental factor that greatly shapes its vegetation. The island experiences a humid subtropical climate, but the near-constant gales, particularly the strong northwesterly monsoons in winter, dictate what can survive here. This relentless wind pressure results in a botanical phenomenon known as anemomorphosis, the physical shaping of plants by wind.
On Marado, this is most visible in the island's few forested areas. Originally, the island had an old-growth forest, but cultivation that began in 1883 removed most of it. Today, a small, protected forest of black pine trees (Pinus thunbergii) stands in the island's center. These trees, along with other low-growing shrubs, show extreme examples of wind-sculpted growth. Instead of growing vertically, their trunks and branches extend almost horizontally, parallel to the ground, in the direction of the prevailing winds. This creates a dense, low-profile canopy that hugs the landscape. The coastline, with cliffs reaching up to 20 meters, also hosts hardy, low-growing wildflowers and cacti adapted to the wind and salt spray.
An Unlikely Refuge
The distorted, flattened canopy of Marado's trees creates a distinct microclimate on an otherwise exposed island. Beneath the tangled, horizontal branches, the wind speed drops significantly. This sheltered space maintains higher humidity and more stable temperatures compared to the windswept grasslands covering most of the island. This effect is an important refuge for the island's insect populations.
For small flying insects, the constant gusts are a serious threat, risking being blown far out to sea. The calm space under the canopy provides a safe haven for feeding, breeding, and sheltering. While specific studies on Marado's insect-plant interactions are limited, the island is a known stopover for migratory birds, which feed on these insect populations. The ecosystem supports a variety of insect orders, including Hemiptera (true bugs) and Diptera (flies), which are common inhabitants of such sheltered vegetation across the Korean peninsula. The very force that deforms the island's trees also engineers a unique habitat, making the survival of other, smaller organisms possible in this harsh maritime environment. The entire island, recognized for its unique ecosystem, was designated as Natural Monument No. 423 in July 2000.
