Architectural petrification
The Lycian rock tombs of Fethiye, known in antiquity as Telmessos, represent a direct translation of timber construction into stone. Carved from the region's soft limestone cliffs around the 4th century BCE, these necropolises replicate the structural and aesthetic details of traditional Lycian houses. The masons painstakingly chiseled features such as projecting square and round beam-ends, which in later designs evolved into a dentil frieze, a decorative band of rectangular blocks. The earliest tombs are simpler "house-types," while later, more elaborate versions incorporate influences from Greek temple architecture, featuring Ionic columns and pediments.
The prominent example, the Tomb of Amyntas, displays the facade of an Ionian temple in antis, with two columns between the projecting walls. An inscription on the tomb identifies its occupant as "Amyntas, son of Hermagios," dating it to around 350 BCE. The carving on this and other tombs is so detailed that it even depicts metal nails on the panels of the false doors. The interior chambers are comparatively plain, often containing simple stone couches where the deceased were placed. These chambers were designed to hold multiple bodies, suggesting that families were often laid to rest together.
The science of placement
The high, seemingly inaccessible placement of the Lycian tombs on sheer cliff faces was a deliberate choice driven by both belief and pragmatism. The Lycians believed that winged, siren-like creatures would carry the souls of their dead to the afterlife. Placing the tombs at great heights was thought to facilitate this celestial journey. The elevated position also served a practical purpose: it protected the tombs from grave robbers and natural threats like flooding, preserving them for millennia.
The geology of the region, specifically the abundant and relatively soft limestone, enabled the Lycians to perfect this form of burial architecture. The cliffs themselves are part of a complex tectonic zone where the African and Eurasian plates converge. The tombs were carved directly from the living rock, making them monolithic structures, not assembled ones. Access to the work sites would have required extensive scaffolding or rope systems, a significant feat of ancient engineering. Visitors today can reach the Tomb of Amyntas by climbing a steep staircase of approximately 200 steps, which provides a direct sense of the verticality and effort involved. The interiors, however, remain largely empty due to looting over the centuries.
