Sagas, scholars, and sod houses
At the northernmost tip of Newfoundland's Great Northern Peninsula sits the only authenticated Norse site in North America. For centuries, the Icelandic Sagas—specifically the "Saga of the Greenlanders" and the "Saga of Erik the Red"—spoke of a western land called Vinland, visited by explorers like Leif Erikson around the year 1000. These tales were considered myths until the 1960s, when Norwegian explorer Helge Ingstad and archaeologist Anne Stine Ingstad followed the sagas' geographical descriptions. A local man from the village of L'Anse aux Meadows, George Decker, led them to a series of subtle, grassy mounds that looked like buried ruins.
Excavations between 1961 and 1968 revealed the remains of eight timber-framed buildings covered in sod. These structures were identical in construction to Norse sites in Greenland and Iceland from the same period. The settlement included three dwellings, a forge for smithing iron, and several workshops. The largest longhouse measured 28.8 by 15.6 meters and contained multiple rooms. The discovery provided the first physical proof of a European presence in the Americas centuries before Columbus.
A cosmic clock and life in Vinland
The artifacts unearthed at the site show daily life. Archaeologists found over 800 objects, including a bronze ring-headed pin for fastening a cloak, a bone needle, iron boat rivets, and a soapstone spindle whorl. The rivets point to ship repair, an important activity for transatlantic voyagers, while the spindle whorl and needle show that women were part of the settlement. Food remains included butternuts, which do not grow north of New Brunswick, suggesting the Norse traveled farther south into the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The population of the settlement is estimated to have been between 70 and 90 people.
For decades, radiocarbon dating placed the site broadly around 1000 CE. But a 2021 study pinpointed the date with unprecedented accuracy. Scientists took advantage of a known cosmic radiation event—a massive solar storm in 992-993 CE—that caused a sharp, global spike in atmospheric carbon-14. This spike was absorbed by trees and left a distinct signature in the tree ring for that year. By analyzing wood artifacts from the site that showed clear marks from metal axes—tools the Indigenous population did not use—researchers found the 993 CE carbon-14 marker. They then counted the tree rings from that point to the outer edge of the wood. The count proved the trees were felled exactly in the year 1021 CE, establishing the earliest known and precisely dated European activity in the Americas.
