The Lake's Invisible Rhythm
Lake Garda, Italy's largest lake, experiences a continuous, slow-motion sloshing of its entire water mass. This phenomenon, known as a seiche, is a standing wave that oscillates back and forth within the enclosed basin, much like water swaying in a bathtub. The primary longitudinal seiche on Lake Garda has a period of approximately 43 minutes. This means that for roughly 21.5 minutes, the water level subtly rises at the northern end of the lake in Riva del Garda, while it simultaneously falls at the southern end near Peschiera. The motion then reverses for the next 21.5 minutes.
The main drivers of this oscillation are the lake's famous thermal winds. A strong, predictable wind blowing consistently in one direction pushes water toward the downwind end of the lake. Lake Garda has two such winds: the Pelèr, which blows from the north from early morning until around noon, and the Ora, which blows from the south in the afternoon. When these winds cease or change, the piled-up water surges back, initiating the standing wave. While the vertical change in water level is usually only a few centimeters and imperceptible to the naked eye, it is a constant and measurable feature of the lake's physics.
Measuring the Oscillation
The existence and precise period of Lake Garda's seiche are confirmed by limnographs and modern pressure sensors, which continuously record the lake's water level. When scientists perform a spectral analysis on this time-series data, they can identify the dominant frequencies of oscillation. For Lake Garda, this analysis shows a clear peak at the frequency corresponding to the 43-minute period of the fundamental, or uninodal, seiche.
The period of a seiche is determined by the lake's physical characteristics: its length, and its average depth. For a simple basin, the period can be calculated with a formula developed by Swiss hydrologist François-Alphonse Forel, who first studied the phenomenon on Lake Geneva. Lake Garda's specific dimensions, a length of 51.6 kilometers and a maximum depth of 346 meters, are what create its characteristic 43-minute uninodal period. Scientists can also identify higher-order seiches (binodal, trinodal, etc.) with more nodes and shorter periods, which exist as harmonics of the fundamental wave.
