Ground-truth for a glowing planet
Lake Cargelligo, a small town in the Central West region of New South Wales, sits under some of the darkest skies in Australia. This lack of light pollution provides a unique scientific opportunity. The site is an important baseline for calibrating satellite instruments that map the entirety of Earth's artificial lights at night. Without a reliable "zero" point from a dark, inhabited area, the global data would be less accurate.
The main instrument is the Day/Night Band (DNB) on the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS), flying aboard the Suomi NPP satellite since 2011. The DNB is a panchromatic channel sensitive to light across a wavelength range of 0.5 to 0.9 micrometers. It is sensitive enough to detect light sources over seven orders of magnitude, from bright daytime scenes to the faint glow of a city under quarter-moon illumination. Scientists use on-the-ground measurements of sky brightness at Lake Cargelligo to fine-tune the DNB's sensors, a process known as "ground-truthing." This ensures that the light intensity measured from orbit corresponds accurately to the actual light emitted on the surface.
This calibration is important for studies of urbanization, energy consumption, and the ecological impacts of artificial light. The VIIRS DNB offers a significant improvement over its predecessor, the Operational Linescan System (OLS), by providing higher-resolution, better-calibrated data that can quantify light sources.
An astronomical haven
The dark skies over Lake Cargelligo are for satellites. The region's remoteness and low population density make it a destination for amateur and professional astronomers. Far from the skyglow of major cities, the Milky Way stretches from horizon to horizon, and celestial objects invisible elsewhere become apparent. Viewers can easily spot the Magellanic Clouds—dwarf galaxies orbiting our own—and the faint zodiacal light.
The land around Lake Cargelligo is the traditional land of the Wiradjuri people, who have their own astronomical traditions. For thousands of years, they have observed the sky, using the movements of stars and constellations to mark seasons and guide cultural practices. The Pleiades star cluster, for instance, is in the Dreaming story of the Seven Sisters.
While Australia has several designated Dark Sky Parks, such as Warrumbungle National Park, the value of Lake Cargelligo lies in its status as a typical, inhabited town that happens to be exceptionally dark. This provides a more realistic baseline for understanding the light output of similar settlements globally, making the scientific work performed here indispensable for monitoring our planet's changing nighttime environment.
