The Altar's Chemical Signature
At the archaeological site of Kyzyltepa, a fortified citadel dating to the Achaemenid period (ca. 550-330 BCE), researchers uncovered a cultic structure containing several fire altars. One altar, a square structure measuring roughly 7 by 7 meters, showed signs of prolonged exposure to intense heat, with a hardened, dark gray surface and layers of pure ash. This site is considered one of the earliest known potential Zoroastrian fire temples. Scientific analysis of the thick, calcified ash deposits left on the altar revealed a surprising level of ritual precision.
Archaeobotanical and isotopic analysis of the ash, a method that identifies the chemical signatures of burnt plant matter, determined that the fuel source was exclusively wood from the wild pistachio tree, Pistacia vera. This finding is significant because the region around Kyzyltepa is not the native habitat for this species. The analysis indicates a consistent and deliberate choice, ruling out the use of any locally available woods like juniper, ash, or poplar that were identified in other contexts at the site. The transportation of this specific wood over long distances shows its special status.
