A celestial map on stone
In the arid region of the Syrdarya region, a series of unassuming boulders holds a map of the ancient night sky. The Kultobe petroglyphs are simple cup marks, or cupules, pecked into the rock surface. These markings are not random; they form patterns that correspond to the positions of stars and constellations as they appeared thousands of years ago. This form of rock art demonstrates the astronomical knowledge of the region's Bronze Age inhabitants.
The people who created this star map lived during a period of significant cultural development across Central Asia. Around 1500 BCE, the area of modern Uzbekistan had complex societies recognized for their advancements in metallurgy, farming, and settlement building. Cultures like the Sapalli and the broader Bactria-Margiana Archaeological Complex (BMAC) were flourishing, constructing fortified buildings and expanding trade networks. While many petroglyph sites in Uzbekistan depict animals like goats and bulls or scenes of hunting, the abstract stellar patterns at Kultobe suggest a different purpose: a durable record of celestial observations. The carvings themselves were laborious to create, chipped into the hard rock surface with stone or metal tools.
Dating with drifting stars
The 1500 BCE date for the Kultobe petroglyphs was determined using a method that relies on the movement of stars themselves. This technique, known as proper motion calculation, accounts for the fact that stars are not fixed points in the sky. Over vast timescales, they drift in different directions relative to Earth. The constellations we see today are temporary arrangements. By creating computer models of the night sky, researchers can effectively travel back in time, seeing how the arrangements of stars looked in any given century. The pattern of cupules at Kultobe matches the stellar positions of the sky in the mid-second millennium BCE, but not of other periods.
This analytical approach connects the Bronze Age rock art to a long and distinguished history of astronomy in Uzbekistan. While the Kultobe petroglyphs represent an ancient form of sky-watching, the region became a global center for astronomical science 3,000 years later. In the 1420s, the astronomer-ruler Ulugh Beg constructed a major observatory in Samarkand. This institution housed a massive marble sextant, over 30 meters in height, and produced some of the most accurate star catalogs of the pre-telescopic era. The Kultobe map suggests the foundations of this scientific tradition are far older, rooted in the observations of people who lived and farmed this land thousands of years earlier.
