A Canvas Through Millennia
In the foothills of the Zarafshan and Hissar mountain ranges, a single rock surface at Katta Langar is a multi-millennial gallery of Central Asian art. The site contains thousands of individual petroglyphs, and its true scientific value comes from superimposition—the practice of carving new images directly on top of older ones. To the unaided eye, the panel is a chaotic jumble of lines and shapes. For researchers, it is a layered record of cultural evolution spanning approximately 4,000 years.
Chronological analysis, based on stylistic comparisons with other Central Asian sites, reveals at least five distinct artistic periods stacked on top of one another. The oldest layers date to the Bronze Age (roughly III-II millennia BCE), characterized by depictions of bulls and other large wild game. Subsequent eras added their own cultural signatures. The Iron Age (I millennium BCE) introduced the famous Sako-Scythian "animal style," with stylized deer and predators. Later periods, including the early Middle Ages, show horsemen, banners, and clan symbols known as tamgas, reflecting the rise of Turkic cultures. The most recent additions include Arabic script and geometric symbols, bringing the rock's long history as a canvas to a close.
Decoding the Layers with Light
Separating these overlapping images is a significant challenge. The lines are often faint, and the "desert sunburn" or patination—a dark varnish that forms on rock over time—can obscure details. Archaeologists now use non-invasive digital imaging techniques to peel back the layers. The primary tool for this work is a software plugin called DStretch, which stands for decorrelation stretch. This algorithm dramatically increases subtle color variations in a digital photograph that are invisible to the human eye.
The process works by exaggerating the faint chemical and color differences between carvings of different ages. An older petroglyph, having been exposed to the elements longer, will have a different patination and mineral composition than a newer one carved into the same rock face. DStretch remaps the color values in an image to make these subtle distinctions pop. A confusing panel of overlapping brown and grey lines can be transformed into a bright image where Bronze Age bulls appear in one color, Iron Age deer in another, and medieval warriors in a third. This method allows researchers to trace individual figures from different eras, establishing a clear relative chronology for the artistic styles and the cultures that created them. The technique is a non-destructive way to analyze and record complex rock art sites.
