A nutrient superhighway from sea to soil
Each year, the rivers of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula turn red with millions of spawning Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus species). This migration is the engine of an ecological process, transferring vast quantities of marine-derived nutrients into the terrestrial environment. The primary agents of this transfer are Kamchatka brown bears (Ursus arctos beringianus), which congregate at the rivers to feast. A single adult chum salmon contains about 130 grams of nitrogen and 20 grams of phosphorus.
Bears carry up to half of the salmon they catch away from the streams and into the surrounding forest to avoid competition. They often consume only the most energy-rich parts—like skin, brain, and eggs—leaving the majority of the carcass behind. This behavior deposits an enormous quantity of fertilizer directly onto the forest floor. In some areas, these carcasses contribute up to 120 kilograms of nitrogen per hectare, a rate comparable to industrial fertilization. This influx of nutrients is traced by scientists using stable isotope analysis. Nitrogen-15 (¹⁵N), an isotope more abundant in marine food webs, appears in high concentrations in the soil, plants, and even insects of these riverside forests, confirming their oceanic origin. The signature of salmon can be detected in vegetation up to 800 meters from the stream.
An ecosystem built on fish
The annual salmon deposit has deep effects on the entire ecosystem. Nitrogen is often a limiting nutrient in coastal forests, and this marine subsidy dramatically accelerates plant growth. Studies in similar ecosystems have shown that trees on the banks of salmon-rich rivers can grow more than three times faster than trees along salmon-free rivers. Sitka spruce trees have been found to derive up to 70% of their nitrogen from salmon. This enrichment cascades through the food web. Insects thrive on the decaying carcasses, and their populations support local birds. Other mammals, from foxes to ermine, also scavenge the nutrient-rich leftovers.
Kuril Lake is, a volcanic caldera that hosts one of the largest sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) spawning events in Eurasia. Between 1.5 and 3.5 million sockeye return here annually, attracting hundreds of brown bears to its shores. This high density of predators and prey makes it an important location for scientific study and an example of the connection between marine and terrestrial life. The ecosystem also supports a large population of Steller's sea eagles (Haliaeetus pelagicus), one of the world's largest raptors, which gather by the hundreds in winter to feed on the abundant salmon.
