The World's Deepest Geological Archive
The Kali Gandaki Gorge in Nepal is one of the deepest canyons on Earth. Flanked by the 8,091-meter Annapurna I and the 8,167-meter Dhaulagiri I, the riverbed at some points lies more than 5,500 meters below the peaks. The river is an antecedent drainage system, meaning it is older than the mountains that surround it. It maintained its course as the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collided, forcing the Himalayas to rise around it over the last 50 million years.
This immense geological uplift provides a cross-section through the Earth's crust, exposing layers of rock that were once the floor of the ancient Tethys Sea. Within these exposed sedimentary layers, particularly the black shales of the Upper Jurassic Nupra Formation (correlating to the Spiti Shale), are countless fossilized ammonites. These marine cephalopods lived and died between 165 and 140 million years ago, during the Jurassic Period. As the river erodes the soft shale, it frees the hard, fossil-filled concretions which then tumble downstream. Genera commonly found here include Blanfordiceras, Haplophylloceras, and Perisphinctes.
From Fossil to Living Deity
These ammonite fossils are known locally as shaligrama stones (shaligrama shila). In the Vaishnava tradition of Hinduism, they are symbols but are direct, aniconic manifestations of the god Vishnu. Unlike idols carved by human hands, shaligramas are considered naturally formed and intrinsically divine, requiring no consecration ritual before they can be worshipped.
Devotees identify and classify the stones based on a complex system of features. The number and arrangement of the spiral-shaped chambers, called "chakras," are of primary importance. A stone with one chakra might be identified as Sudarshana, while one with two is a Lakshmi Narayana. A shaligrama with ten distinct markings can represent all ten primary avatars of Vishnu, known as the Dasavatara Shaligram. Other identifying marks include the shape of the aperture (vadana), surface lines (rekha), and color.
Pilgrims travel to sacred sites along the river, especially near Muktinath and Damodar Kunda, to search the riverbed for these holy fossils. The stones are then taken to homes and temples across South Asia and the global diaspora for use in daily worship. The trade links deep-time geology and living religious practice, where objects of scientific study are objects of sacred veneration.
