An accidental discovery
In 1961, workers at a barite mine about 100 kilometers west of Marrakesh found a human skull (Irhoud 1). The initial assessment of the fossils from Jebel Irhoud was that they were Neanderthals, approximately 40,000 years old. This classification was based on some archaic features, such as an elongated braincase. Subsequent discoveries in the 1960s unearthed more remains, including parts of another adult skull (Irhoud 2) and a child's mandible (Irhoud 3), but their age remained uncertain. For decades, the fossils were considered a North African variant of Neanderthals or a related archaic group. The original excavations also used low-level explosives to clear debris, which complicated later stratigraphic analysis.
Decades later, new excavations starting in 2004, led by Jean-Jacques Hublin of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology and Abdelouahed Ben-Ncer of Morocco's National Institute for Archaeology and Heritage, uncovered more Homo sapiens fossils. These new finds increased the total fossil count to 22, belonging to at least five individuals, including three adults, a juvenile, and a child estimated to be around seven and a half years old. The new fossil discoveries were found in a section of the cave undisturbed by the earlier mining operations, allowing for precise contextual analysis.
A new date for our species
The most significant outcome of the new research was the revised age of the site. Scientists used a dating technique called thermoluminescence on burnt flint tools found in the same archaeological layer as the new fossils. This method measures the accumulated radiation in the crystalline structure of the flint since it was last heated in a fire. The results provided a weighted average age of 315,000 ± 34,000 years. A separate dating method, electron spin resonance, was applied to a tooth from the Irhoud 3 mandible, yielding a compatible age of 286,000 ± 32,000 years.
These dates dramatically pushed back the timeline for Homo sapiens. Previously, the oldest known fossils of our species were from Omo Kibish in Ethiopia, dated to around 195,000 years old. The Jebel Irhoud evidence suggests that Homo sapiens had emerged at least 100,000 years earlier and were already present across the African continent. The finding challenges the long-held idea that our species originated solely in a single "cradle of humanity" in East Africa. Instead, it supports a more complex model of pan-African evolution, where modern human features developed across different, interconnected populations.
The anatomy of the Jebel Irhoud fossils shows a mosaic of modern and archaic traits. Micro-CT scans revealed that their faces, jaws, and teeth are almost indistinguishable from those of modern humans. Their braincases are more elongated and lower, like more archaic hominins. This suggests that facial morphology evolved to its modern form early in the history of Homo sapiens, while the shape of the brain and possibly its functions, continued to evolve. The people of Jebel Irhoud were skilled hunters, using Middle Stone Age Levallois tools to hunt gazelles, hartebeest, zebras, and wildebeest. The prevalence of gazelle remains indicates it was a primary food source.
