A message from a hellish Earth
The Jack Hills of Western Australia are an low-lying range of eroded eroded hills. Geologically, they are part of the Narryer Gneiss Terrane, an 80-kilometer-long belt of metamorphosed sedimentary and igneous rocks. Within a specific layer of metamorphosed conglomerate, scientists have found the oldest known fragments of Earth's original crust: tiny crystals of the mineral zircon (zirconium silicate - ZrSiO4). These zircons are detrital, meaning they eroded from even older parent rocks, were carried by water, and deposited into sediment which later became the conglomerate we see today. The host rock itself is estimated to be around 3.0 billion years old.
The most ancient of these crystals has been dated to 4.404 billion years ago, with a margin of error of only 8 million years. This means the crystal formed just 160 million years after the Earth itself. The dating process relies on the radioactive decay of uranium atoms, which are incorporated into the zircon's crystal structure, into lead. By measuring the ratio of uranium to lead isotopes, scientists can calculate the crystal's age with remarkable precision. This process has been refined using techniques like atom-probe tomography, which can map individual atoms of lead within the crystal, confirming that the lead has not moved over billions of years and ensuring the date is accurate.
