This quartz-rich composition was a deliberate technological choice. The Ottoman court potters were trying to imitate the prized white-bodied porcelain arriving from Ming Dynasty China. While chemically different, the fritware body provided an exceptionally hard and brilliantly white canvas that did not warp or discolor at firing temperatures around 900°C. Before the pigments were applied, the ceramic body was coated in a white slip of similar composition, ensuring a perfectly smooth, white surface for the decoration. The near-identical thermal expansion coefficients of the body and slip were critical to prevent cracking during firing.
A global palette of metal oxides
The deep, lasting colors of İznik tiles come from a carefully controlled application of metal oxides painted under a transparent glaze. The base glaze itself was a lead-alkaline-tin composition, containing 25-30% lead oxide, which acted as a flux to lower the melting point. Modern analysis using non-destructive X-ray fluorescence (XRF) shows the global origins of these materials.
The signature deep blue is derived from cobalt oxide (CoO). This pigment was notoriously difficult to control, but İznik artisans perfected its use. Historical sources and chemical analysis show the cobalt ore was likely obtained from Qamsar, near Kashan in central Iran. The bright turquoise color comes from copper oxide (CuO), while a bright emerald green was also achieved with copper oxide, its final hue dependent on the glaze chemistry.
Perhaps the most famous color is the "İznik red." Introduced around 1560, this was not a typical pigment but a thick slip of iron-rich clay, specifically hematite (Fe₂O₃), applied under the glaze. This created a distinct, slightly raised texture, a feature unique to İznik in the history of world ceramics. The tin oxide (SnO₂) used to give the base glaze its underlying brightness and opacity was imported from sources in Europe, including Cornwall in England. This combination of Persian cobalt, European tin, and local Turkish technology demonstrates a complex and globalized supply chain operating over 500 years ago.
