An evolutionary laboratory
Ilha da Queimada Grande, located about 33 kilometers off the coast of São Paulo, is the only habitat of the golden lancehead pit viper, Bothrops insularis. The island is small, covering just 43 hectares (106 acres). Rising sea levels isolated the island from the Brazilian mainland approximately 11,000 years ago, trapping a population of snakes that were likely the common lancehead, Bothrops jararaca. This isolation created a unique evolutionary pressure. With no ground-level predators and a lack of terrestrial prey, the snakes adapted to hunt the migratory birds that use the island as a seasonal resting stop.
To effectively prey on birds, which could fly away even after being bitten, the vipers evolved a fast-acting and potent venom. Scientific analysis shows the golden lancehead's venom is up to five times more potent than that of its mainland relative, B. jararaca. The venom is a complex hemotoxic cocktail that causes effects like kidney failure, brain hemorrhaging, intestinal bleeding, and severe tissue necrosis. A bite from a golden lancehead carries a seven percent chance of death, even if the victim receives medical treatment. The snake's population is estimated to be between 2,000 and 4,000 individuals. This results in a high density, with some estimates suggesting one snake per square meter in certain areas.
A forbidden zone with medical potential
The island is strictly off-limits to the public. The Brazilian Navy controls all access, permitting only vetted researchers and naval personnel to land. A lighthouse, built in 1909, was automated in the 1920s after, according to local legend, the last keeper and his family were killed by snakes that entered their home through the windows. The island's name, Queimada Grande, translates to "Great Burn," likely referencing past attempts to clear the forest with fire to establish a banana plantation.
Despite its dangers, the golden lancehead is classified as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. The species faces threats from habitat degradation and illegal poaching. Smugglers, known as biopirates, capture the snakes for the exotic animal trade and for biochemical research, with a single snake fetching between $10,000 and $30,000 on the black market.
The potent venom that makes the golden lancehead so deadly also holds significant medical promise. Researchers are studying its complex proteins for potential pharmaceutical applications. Venoms from the Bothrops genus have already contributed to the development of life-saving drugs, including Captopril, a medication used to treat high blood pressure, which was derived from the venom of the B. jararaca. The unique composition of the golden lancehead's venom, containing enzymes that cause bleeding and coagulation disorders, is a target for developing new anticoagulants and other medicines.
