The White Gold of the Atacama
In the hyper-arid Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on Earth, lies the ghost town of Humberstone. This is not a typical ghost town of the Old West, but an industrial fossil from an era when Chile monopolized a globally important chemical: sodium nitrate (NaNO₃). Known as "white gold," this salt was mined from vast deposits of caliche ore. Its value came from its high nitrogen content, a component for two world-changing products: agricultural fertilizers and high explosives. For over 60 years, beginning around 1880, Chile was the world's primary supplier, transforming agriculture in Europe and the Americas.
The process at Humberstone and over 200 similar sites was an industrial chemistry process for its time. The extraction relied on the Shanks system, where crushed caliche ore was loaded into large vats and leached with hot water to dissolve the sodium nitrate. After leaching, the nitrate-rich solution, known as "mother liquor," was drained into shallow vats to cool. As the temperature dropped, the sodium nitrate crystallized, separating from the liquid and ready for processing and export. The entire operation was a massive undertaking, connected by a purpose-built railway network that transported the final product to port cities like Iquique, 48 kilometers away.
A Company Town's Rise and Fall
Humberstone was a company town; it was a self-contained company town that, at its peak, housed over 3,700 people. Workers and their families, drawn from Chile, Peru, and Bolivia, lived in company-owned housing arranged in a strict hierarchy. Managers resided in larger homes, while laborers occupied smaller, standardized dwellings. The town included a large theater built from Oregon pine, a hospital, a school, a church, and even a full-size swimming pool.
Life was controlled by the company through the "ficha" system. Workers received payment not in legal currency but in tokens or scrip that could only be redeemed at the company store, the pulpería. This system trapped workers in a cycle of dependency.
The downfall of Humberstone and Chile's nitrate empire was swift and came from a laboratory in Germany. In 1909, chemist Fritz Haber developed a process for synthesizing ammonia from atmospheric nitrogen. Industrialized by Carl Bosch, the Haber-Bosch process made the production of synthetic nitrogen-based fertilizers and explosives profitable. Denied access to Chilean nitrate during World War I, Germany scaled up this new technology. By the post-war years, synthetic fertilizers had destroyed the market for natural nitrates. The Great Depression of 1929 further crippled the industry, and by 1960, Humberstone was completely abandoned.
