From Clay Tablets to Cloud Computing
The Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum (HNF) in Paderborn, Germany, is the world's largest computer museum. Its permanent exhibition covers 6,000 square meters and presents the 5,000-year history of information technology. The museum occupies the former headquarters of Nixdorf Computer AG, a company founded by the visionary German entrepreneur Heinz Nixdorf. The idea for the museum began in 1977 when Nixdorf received a collection of historic office machines for his company's 25th anniversary and decided to expand it. The museum officially opened on October 24, 1996.
The exhibition begins its timeline around 3,000 BCE with the origins of writing in Mesopotamia. Visitors can see examples of cuneiform script on clay tablets, one of the earliest forms of recorded information. The timeline continues through the development of mechanical calculation. The museum displays fully functioning replicas of early calculating machines, including Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz's stepped-drum calculator. Other mechanical wonders include a Jacquard loom, which used punched cards to control woven patterns, and the 1850 Thomas Arithmometer, the first commercially successful mechanical calculator. The collection includes over 700 pocket calculators, tracing the path of miniaturization.
Codebreakers, Mainframes, and Humanoid Robots
A special area of the museum is dedicated to cryptography, with a collection of cipher machines. The highlight is an Enigma machine, the electro-mechanical rotor cipher device used by the German military in World War II. The Enigma implemented a complex polyalphabetic substitution cipher through a series of rotors and a plugboard. The museum's Enigma is a German Navy model, which had a more complex system than the army and air force versions.
The second floor transitions to the modern computer era. Exhibits include components from the room-sized ENIAC, one of the earliest electronic general-purpose computers, and the onboard computer from a Gemini space capsule. The history of personal computing is also present, with famous machines like an Apple I. The museum keeps pace with current developments, with exhibits on artificial intelligence and robotics. Visitors can interact with humanoid robots like Ameca, which is known for realistic facial expressions and gestures. In a new exhibition area, the HNF is the first museum in Germany to focus on the principles of quantum computing. Many exhibits are interactive, allowing visitors to try historical telephones, play classic video games like Pong and Pac-Man, or be guided through the museum by a robot.
