An ancient genetic puzzle solved on a cave wall
Inside the Pech Merle cave in France, a panel of art known as "The Dappled Horses" dates back approximately 25,000 years. For decades, archaeologists debated whether the distinct spots on the horses were realistic portrayals or symbolic additions. The answer came from an entirely different field: paleogenetics. An international research team analyzed DNA from prehistoric horse bones found in Siberia, Europe, and the Iberian Peninsula. Their 2011 study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found the specific gene variant for leopard spotting. This discovery confirmed that spotted horses did exist during the Upper Paleolithic period, meaning the artists were likely painting what they saw in their environment.
The paintings themselves are remarkable. The artists of the Gravettian culture used the natural contours of the limestone wall to give the two horses sense of dimension. They created the images using charcoal and manganese oxide pigments, likely applying the paint by chewing the charcoal to mix with saliva and then spitting it onto the rock surface. This technique created the distinct spotted patterns that cover the bodies of the horses, one of which measures over 1.5 meters in length. These paintings are among nearly 800 individual representations found throughout the cave's seven chambers, which include images of mammoths, bison, reindeer, and human handprints.
A cave carved by time
The Grotte de Pech Merle is a solutional cave, formed over millions of years by an ancient underground river that carved through the limestone hillside. The cave system extends for more than two kilometers, although only about 1,200 meters are accessible to the public. Its galleries are wide, averaging 10 meters, with ceilings that reach heights of 5 to 10 meters. This geological history is visible everywhere, from massive collapsed chambers to delicate calcite formations like stalactites and stalagmites.
Long before humans used the cave, it was a habitat for wildlife. Skeletons of cave bears (Ursus spelaeus) that hibernated and died within the chambers have been discovered, along with their claw marks gouged into the clay walls. The first prehistoric artists entered Pech Merle around 29,000 years ago. Later, mudslides sealed the entrances, creating a stable environment that preserved the delicate artwork for millennia. The cave remained hidden until 1922, when three local teenagers, Marthe David (13), André David (16), and Henri Dutetre (15), rediscovered it. Under the guidance of Father Amédée Lemozi, a local priest and amateur archaeologist, the site was studied and later opened to the public in 1926.
