An ecosystem engineer at work
In the semi-arid forests of the Gran Chaco, the giant armadillo (Priodontes maximus) is a powerful force of nature. As the largest living armadillo species, it can weigh over 50 kilograms and measure 1.5 meters from nose to tail. But its most significant feature is its immense digging capability, powered by formidable front claws, including a third claw that can grow up to 22 cm long. This animal is a physical ecosystem engineer. Its actions directly create or modify habitats for other species.
A single giant armadillo excavates a new burrow roughly every other day, moving vast amounts of soil. These excavations are not random; they are primarily for seeking food, mainly ants and termites, which can constitute 90% of their diet. The burrows are substantial structures. Entrances in the Argentine Chaco average 43 cm wide and 36 cm high, often opening to the west. Tunnels can extend over 5 meters long and reach depths of 1.5 meters, ending in a resting chamber. This constant bioturbation, the mixing of soil layers, aerates the earth and influences nutrient cycles, altering the local environment at a fundamental level.
A thermal refuge for an entire community
The most remarkable function of these burrows is the stable microclimate they provide. While surface temperatures in the Chaco can fluctuate dramatically, the inside of a giant armadillo burrow remains at a near-constant temperature of around 24°C (75°F). This makes the burrows a important thermal refuge, protecting wildlife from both extreme heat and cold.
This climate-controlled environment attracts a wide array of tenants. More than 70 vertebrate species have been documented using the burrows. Camera traps have recorded ocelots, crab-eating foxes, collared peccaries, southern tamanduas, and various reptiles and birds taking shelter inside. Some animals, like the southern tamandua, use the burrows extensively, with females leaving their young inside for protection. Others, such as the rare short-eared dog and bush dogs in other parts of South America, rely on these subterranean havens. The abandoned burrows become permanent homes for opossums, rabbits, snakes, and rodents. The presence of the giant armadillo creates effects, supporting a diverse community that would otherwise be more exposed to predators and harsh weather.
The giant armadillo is classified as Vulnerable to extinction by the IUCN. Habitat loss from deforestation, hunting, and agricultural expansion are the primary threats to its survival. The disappearance of this single species would have consequences, potentially leading to a decline in the many other animals that depend on the shelters it single-handedly creates.
