An Ocean Floor in the Desert
The striking white landscape of the Farafra Depression shows the Late Cretaceous period, roughly 80 million years ago. The entire region was once the floor of the Tethys Sea, a vast, warm, shallow ocean that separated the ancient continents of Laurasia and Gondwana. The brilliant white rock is not sand, but a thick layer of chalk known as the Khoman Formation. This formation, which can be 30 to 80 meters thick, is composed almost entirely of the microscopic calcite skeletons of marine algae called coccolithophores. Over millions of years, trillions of these tiny plates accumulated on the seafloor, compacting into the dense chalk visible today.
The surreal pillars and mushroom-shaped sculptures are not carved by water, but by wind. These features, known as yardangs, are formed by aeolian erosion. The prevailing winds, carrying abrasive sand, act like a sandblaster, scouring the soft chalk. The process is most effective within a meter of the ground, where the density of saltating sand grains is highest, often leading to the undercutting that creates top-heavy mushroom shapes. Harder layers or fossil inclusions within the chalk resist this erosion more effectively, leaving them behind as the softer surrounding material is stripped away.
The Cretaceous Inhabitants
The chalk of the Khoman Formation is a massive, open-air tomb for the creatures that swam in the Tethys Sea. The wind erosion that sculpts the landscape also exposes an abundance of marine fossils. These are not mineralized replicas; they are the actual shells and teeth of animals that died millions of years ago, preserved within the soft chalk.
Common finds include the spiral-shelled cephalopods known as ammonites, relatives of the modern nautilus. Sea urchins (echinoids) are also abundant, often found with their complex patterned skeletons, or tests, perfectly intact. Shark teeth are scattered throughout the formation, remnants of the cartilaginous predators that patrolled these waters. Other fossils include bivalves like Exogyra overwagi and Pycnodonta vesicularis, gastropods, and corals. In nearby regions with sediment from the same period, fossils of large marine reptiles like turtles and even a 4-meter-long crocodile-like predator named Wadisuchus kassabi have been discovered, showing a complete and complex marine ecosystem.
