A Volcano's Chemical Fingerprint
Mount Erciyes, a large stratovolcano in Central Anatolia, is the source of a unique form of obsidian, a type of natural volcanic glass. Obsidian forms when silica-rich lava cools too rapidly for mineral crystals to grow, resulting in a glass-like substance. The obsidian from Erciyes is primarily dacitic and rhyolitic in composition. What makes this obsidian scientifically distinct is its specific combination of trace elements—a chemical signature that is a geological marker.
Scientists use methods like portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) and neutron activation analysis (NAA) to identify these elemental signatures. Discriminating between different obsidian sources lies in the concentrations of elements like rubidium (Rb), strontium (Sr), and zirconium (Zr). Each volcanic source, including the several distinct flows on Erciyes and nearby Göllü Dağ, has a different and identifiable ratio of these and other elements. This allows archaeologists to match an obsidian artifact found hundreds of kilometers away directly to its volcanic origin with a high degree of certainty. This technique has been important in mapping the movement of materials in the ancient world.
Tracing Neolithic Networks
The unique chemical makeup of Erciyes obsidian provides direct evidence of extensive trade networks during the Neolithic period. As early as 10,000 years ago, during the Pre-Pottery Neolithic, obsidian from this specific region of Cappadocia was a important material. Its conchoidal fracture creates incredibly sharp edges, making it superior to flint for producing cutting tools.
Archaeological excavations across the Near East have unearthed tools made from Central Anatolian obsidian at great distances from the volcano. Artifacts chemically matched to the Erciyes-area sources have been found at major Neolithic settlements like Çatalhöyük in Turkey and even as far as Cyprus and the Levant, over 1,000 kilometers away. The material was transported along established routes, sometimes called the "Levantine Corridor," demonstrating a complex system of exchange and interaction between early settled communities. The presence of this specific obsidian in coastal sites suggests that maritime routes may have also played a role in its distribution. Finished tools, such as blades, arrowheads, and scrapers, were common trade items. Highly specialized and rare items, like polished obsidian mirrors dated to around 6500 BCE, have also been found at sites like Çatalhöyük and Canhasan, showing the exceptional skill of Neolithic artisans working with this volcanic glass.
