A Plant Without Photosynthesis
In the deep leaf litter of forests in Australia and New Zealand lives a plant that has abandoned photosynthesis entirely. Danhatchia australis, the Northern Ghost Orchid, is a mycoheterotroph, a type of plant that derives all its nutrients not from sunlight, but by parasitizing fungi in the soil. This makes it a rarity in the plant kingdom and a subject of study for botanists. The orchid lacks chlorophyll, the green pigment essential for photosynthesis, resulting in a pale, almost translucent appearance. Its stems, which can grow up to 200 millimeters tall, are a pale rose-pink or brownish-grey, making them extremely difficult to spot against the forest floor.
The orchid's life is tied to the fungal networks that permeate the soil. These fungi, in turn, are often in a symbiotic relationship with other trees, such as the nīkau palm (Rhopalostylis sapida) in New Zealand. Danhatchia australis essentially hacks into this network, stealing the sugars and other organic nutrients that the fungus obtains from its photosynthetic partners. This complex, tripartite relationship means the orchid's survival depends on the fungus, but also on the health of the surrounding forest ecosystem. The plant spends most of its life as a network of brittle, fleshy rhizomes buried deep within the decomposing leaves.
A Ghostly and Elusive Flower
The flowers of Danhatchia australis are as cryptic as the rest of the plant. Appearing from October to November, between one and seven small flowers emerge on the pale stem. Each flower is only 3 to 6 millimeters long, with a pinkish-brown hue and white tips, and they often do not open fully. Some populations are known to be self-pollinating. The entire plant is so inconspicuous that it was only first discovered in Australia recently. This discovery of a new plant genus in a well-botanized region demonstrates how much of the natural world may still remain hidden from scientific observation.
The physical appearance of Danhatchia australis is unique. It produces no green tissue at all. Its underground rhizomes are 3 to 5 millimeters in diameter and form a much-branched, interwoven mass. The erect, unbranched stem bears several pale, scale-like leaves. The flowers themselves have a complex structure, with a pouch-like labellum (the lower petal) that bears several fleshy hairs on each side. The entire plant can be easily mistaken for a mushroom or a dead twig, contributing to its "ghostly" reputation and its ability to remain unseen by all but the most dedicated observers.
