A bridge in the clouds
In Daedunsan Provincial Park, a steel suspension bridge connects two granite peaks. This is the Geumgang Gureumdari, or Cloud Bridge. It is 50 meters long and sits 81 meters above a deep ravine. The bridge frequently becomes enveloped in thick fog, a predictable weather event created by the mountain itself. The peak of Daedunsan mountain, Macheondae, is 878 meters high. The park's terrain forces moist air from the surrounding lowlands to climb, generating clouds at the specific altitude of the bridge.
This process is known as orographic lift. Orography is the study of the physical geography of mountains. As a moving air mass encounters the mountain range, it is forced to rise. When the air gains altitude, it expands due to lower atmospheric pressure and cools down. This change in temperature without heat exchange is called adiabatic cooling. For every 1,000 meters of ascent, the air temperature can drop by nearly 10 degrees Celsius.
The physics of fog formation
The air in the region, particularly during the wet summer season from June to September, is often humid. As this moist air is pushed up the slopes of Daedunsan and cools adiabatically, its relative humidity increases. When the air cools to its dew point temperature, the water vapor within it is no longer able to stay in a gaseous state. It condenses into countless microscopic liquid water droplets, forming a cloud. This type of cloud, formed by the air rising up a slope, is specifically called orographic fog.
The Geumgang Suspension Bridge, built on September 27, 1985, happens to be positioned at an elevation where this condensation frequently occurs. Visitors who take the five-minute cable car ride up the mountain often find themselves walking directly into a newly formed cloud. Above the Cloud Bridge is the Samseon Stairway, a steep, 127-step ladder bridge angled at 51 degrees, which often leads climbers above the fog layer for a clear view of the cloud tops.
