Scientific analysis of the lakebed, however, reveals a different story. By drilling into the sediment at the bottom of Lake Enol, researchers have created a timeline of environmental change, and it shows the history of global plastic pollution.
The sediment cores act as a historical archive. Deeper layers correspond to an older time period. Analysis of these layers shows that the first microscopic plastic particles began to appear in the mid-20th century, a timing that directly corresponds with the post-war boom in global plastic production. The quantity of these particles increases steadily in the sediment layers from that period upwards toward the present day.
The types of polymers found tell their own story. The particles are primarily fragments and fibers of materials like polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polyester. These materials are common in packaging and synthetic textiles. Every time a fleece jacket or synthetic shirt is washed, it sheds thousands of microscopic fibers, which can eventually become airborne. The particles found in the lake sediment are tiny, often less than 150 micrometers in size, making them light enough to travel long distances on air currents.
