A Parasite's Complex Web The Yellow Coralroot, Corallorhiza trifida, is an orchid that has largely abandoned photosynthesis for a different way of life. It is a mycoheterotroph, meaning it derives nutrients from fungi. This plant lives in the shaded understory of boreal forests, where it forms a partnership with mycorrhizal fungi in the soil. Corallorhiza trifida taps into this existing network. It doesn't give anything back to the fungus; instead, it steals the carbon and other nutrients that the fungus has acquired from its tree partner. This three-part relationship (orchid, fungus, and tree) is an epiparasite. Stable isotope analysis shows that the orchid gets about 77% of its carbon and 52% of its nitrogen from its fungal host. Though the plant's stem is often yellowish-green and contains some chlorophyll, the amount of energy it produces through its own photosynthesis is minimal. Its survival depends almost entirely on this theft.
The underground portion of the orchid consists of a brittle, branching rhizome that resembles sea coral. This structure gives the genus its name: Corallorhiza means "coral-root". These rhizomes are where the interaction with the fungal hyphae occurs. The plant is leafless, with only a few scale-like sheaths on its flowering stem.
