The botanical freeloader
The Spotted Coralroot, Corallorhiza maculata, is an orchid that has abandoned photosynthesis entirely. Lacking chlorophyll, this plant cannot produce its own energy from sunlight. Instead, it lives as a myco-heterotroph, a parasite that steals nutrients from fungi in the soil. The orchid's name offers a clue to its lifestyle; Corallorhiza is Greek for "coral root," describing the branching, coral-like rhizomes that form the bulk of the plant underground. These rhizomes are the tools of its trade, infiltrating the vast underground network of a specific fungal group, the family Russulaceae.
This creates a three-part ecological relationship. A nearby tree, often a conifer, forms a mutually beneficial mycorrhizal association with a fungus. The tree provides the fungus with sugars from photosynthesis, and the fungus provides the tree with water and mineral nutrients. The Spotted Coralroot then acts as a freeloader, tapping into this fungal network and siphoning off the nutrients for itself. The fungus gains nothing from this interaction. This specialized diet means the orchid is entirely dependent on the presence of its fungal hosts and cannot be cultivated. The plant can spend years growing entirely underground, only sending up its leafless flowering stalk when conditions are favorable.
A spectrum of stolen color
The visible part of the Spotted Coralroot is a single, leafless stalk, typically reddish-brown or purple, that grows between 10 and 80 centimeters tall. This stalk bears a raceme of 10 to 40 small flowers. Each flower has reddish or brown sepals and petals, but the most distinctive feature is the broad lower petal, or labellum. In the most common form, this labellum is bright white with prominent magenta or deep red spots, which gives the species its name—maculata means "spotted" in Latin.
Not all individuals are spotted. Some varieties of Corallorhiza maculata lack spots entirely, presenting a pure white or yellowish-white labellum. There are also color forms where the entire plant is a pale yellow, cream, or brown instead of the usual reddish-purple. These spotless, often yellowish, variations are sometimes referred to as forma immaculata (spotless) or flavida (yellow). The color variation in the plant's stalk and flowers may reflect differences in the specific compounds it acquires from its fungal hosts. Pollination is carried out by small insects, including mining bees (Andrena) and flies from the genus Empis. The plant is also capable of self-pollination if insect visitors are scarce.
