A plant without green
In the deep shade of oak forests across eastern North America, including Ontario and Quebec, a strange growth pushes through the leaf litter. It looks more like a pale yellow pinecone or a small corncob than a typical plant. This is Conopholis americana, a perennial herb with no green parts. It is a holoparasite, meaning it gets all its nutrients and water from a host plant, completely forgoing photosynthesis. The plant's scientific name derives from the Greek conos (cone) and pholis (scale), describing the cone-shaped stem covered in scale-like bracts.
The life of Conopholis americana begins as a tiny, dust-like seed that must land near the roots of an oak tree, with a strong preference for species in the red oak group. A chemical cue from the oak's roots triggers germination. For the next four or more years, the plant exists entirely underground, developing a large, woody knob called a tubercle where it has attached to the host's root system. This subterranean structure siphons everything the parasite needs from the oak. Only when it reaches maturity does it send up the familiar cone-like flowering stalk, which can reach a height of 8 to 20 centimeters.
Bear corn and its history
The flowering stalks emerge in late spring or early summer, covered in small, tubular, cream-colored flowers that bloom sequentially from the bottom up. Pollination is primarily carried out by bumblebees and other small insects, though the flowers offer no nectar, just pollen. After pollination, each flower develops into a capsule containing hundreds of tiny seeds. The stalks then wither, turning brown and black, and often remain standing through the winter. The plant's entire lifespan can be up to 10 years, with the flowering stalk emerging annually after its initial four-year underground phase.
Conopholis americana has several common names that reflect its appearance and use. "Bear corn" comes from the observation that black bears emerging from hibernation will seek out and eat the nutritious flowering stalks. Other animals like deer and raccoons may also browse the plant, helping to disperse its seeds. Another name, "cancer root," likely refers to the large gall the plant forms on the host root, and not to any proven medicinal properties against the disease. A third name, "squawroot," is a historical term indicating its use in Native American medicine, particularly for treating symptoms of menopause and as an astringent to stop bleeding. Despite its parasitic nature, Conopholis americana does not typically cause significant harm to its massive host oak trees.
