A high-energy life in cold seas
Along the frigid Patagonian coastline, Commerson's dolphins (Cephalorhynchus commersonii) face a constant thermal battle. These small cetaceans, growing to only about 1.5 meters long, have a high surface-area-to-volume ratio, causing them to lose body heat rapidly in waters that can drop to between 4–8°C. To survive, the dolphin has developed a supercharged metabolism. Its metabolic rate is two to three times higher than that of other dolphin species, requiring a massive caloric intake to fuel its internal furnace. An adult Commerson's dolphin must eat about 10% of its body weight daily, a proportional intake much greater than that of a bottlenose dolphin or even a killer whale.
This voracious appetite is satisfied by a diet of energy-rich fish like sardines and hake, as well as squid and crustaceans. A thick layer of blubber provides excellent insulation, but the dolphin's small appendages—the dorsal fin, flippers, and flukes—are potential sources of major heat loss. To mitigate this, their circulatory system uses a countercurrent heat exchange mechanism. Arteries carrying warm blood to these extremities are surrounded by veins returning cold blood to the body's core. This arrangement allows heat to transfer from the warm arterial blood to the cool venous blood, warming it before it re-enters the body and minimizing heat loss to the environment.
A thermal pattern in black and white
The dolphin's striking black-and-white coloration may be camouflage. Scientists theorize this piebald pattern helps with thermoregulation. The black areas of its skin absorb more solar radiation, warming the blood in the vessels just beneath. In contrast, the white sections absorb less heat. This differential heating across the body surface could help the dolphin passively manage its temperature. The black coloration is concentrated on the head, dorsal fin, and flukes—areas important for regulating body heat.
This subspecies, C. c. commersonii, has a sharply delineated color pattern. A second, larger subspecies found around the Kerguelen Islands, C. c. kerguelenensis, displays a more muted gray and white pattern with less distinct borders. The energetic behavior of Commerson's dolphins also contributes to heat production. They are incredibly active and fast swimmers, often seen leaping and spinning in coastal waves. This constant activity, fueled by their high-calorie diet, generates significant body heat, helping them thrive in the near-freezing Patagonian seas.
