Seeing through the trees
Beneath the rice paddies and scattered woodlands of Buriram Province, a vast and complex landscape lay hidden for nearly a millennium. Its discovery required a technology that can digitally strip away vegetation to map the ground itself: LiDAR, or Light Detection and Ranging. By mounting a LiDAR sensor to an aircraft, researchers can fire hundreds of thousands of laser pulses per second toward the earth. By measuring the time it takes for these pulses to reflect off surfaces and return, a hyper-accurate 3D map of the topography is created.
The system's real power in archaeology is its ability to filter out "noise" like trees and buildings. Software can isolate the laser returns that hit the actual ground, creating a "bare-earth" digital elevation model. This process reveals subtle earthworks (embankments, canals, and reservoir edges) that are often completely invisible to a person standing on the ground. In this part of Thailand, the technique exposed a massive, engineered landscape built during the height of the Khmer Empire (roughly 9th to 13th centuries).
An engineered landscape
The LiDAR survey revealed a sophisticated water management system integrated with settlements and temple complexes. This network of canals, dams, and reservoirs, known as barays, was designed to capture and store the heavy rainfall of the monsoon season. The stored water was then used during the dry season to support a large population and enable intensive rice cultivation, potentially allowing for multiple harvests per year.
This system was the foundation of the Khmer civilization's power in the region. The control of water was practical and showed a king's authority and connection to the divine. The hydraulic network supported major temple complexes, most notably Prasat Phanom Rung, a massive Hindu sanctuary built on an extinct volcano. Water from reservoirs on the mountain flowed down through a series of channels and ponds to feed the vast plains below, a system that blended religious symbolism with agricultural engineering. At the foot of the mountain, the associated temple of Prasat Muang Tam is beside a huge baray capable of holding an estimated 1.5 million cubic meters of water. The sheer scale of these earthworks shows that this was not a natural landscape, but one fundamentally reshaped by human hands over centuries.
