A precisely timed arrival
In the arid expanse of the Kyzylkum Desert, about 30 kilometers east of Bukhara, lies a vast, artificial wetland system. This area, composed of the Tudakul and Kuyumazar reservoirs, is an engineered oasis covering nearly 32,000 hectares. For tens of thousands of migratory waterbirds, it is a refueling station. The arrival of these birds shows phenological synchrony. This is the study of how cyclic natural phenomena are timed. The birds' long-distance migration is calibrated to coincide with the explosive emergence of aquatic insects from the reservoirs. This event provides a massive, energy-dense food source exactly when the birds need to replenish fat and protein reserves for the next leg of their journey.
The two main reservoirs that form the wetlands have distinct properties. The Tudakul reservoir, first formed by a natural flood of the Zeravshan River into a desert depression in 1952, has saline water and supports local agriculture and aquaculture. The adjacent Kuyumazar reservoir contains water with lower salinity and is the primary source of drinking water for the city of Bukhara. This complex of man-made aquatic habitats in a desert landscape creates a unique ecological magnet, attracting more than 40,000 birds on average each year.
A hub on the Central Asian Flyway
The Buchara-Kagan wetlands are a designated Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, a status they received in 2020. This designation recognizes their role as a stopover point on the Central Asian Flyway, a migration route that spans 30 countries from Siberia to the Indian Ocean. Over 229 bird species have been recorded here. The site is particularly important for globally threatened species. More than 1% of the entire biogeographical population of the endangered White-headed Duck (Oxyura leucocephala) winters at the reservoirs.
Other species that rely on the habitat include the Marbled Teal (Marmaronetta angustirostris), the Dalmatian Pelican (Pelecanus crispus), and the Pygmy Cormorant (Microcarbo pygmaeus). The site’s biodiversity is not limited to birds. The surrounding area provides a habitat for the vulnerable goitered gazelle (Gazella subgutturosa). The waters of the reservoir system also contain the critically endangered Amu Darya shovelnose sturgeon (Pseudoscaphirhynchus kaufmanni), a fish species native to the region.
