The Ultimate Survivor
In the hypersaline waters of Utah's Great Salt Lake, a tiny crustacean has specialized for survival. This is the world of Artemia franciscana, the American brine shrimp. These creatures endure a habitat where salinity can reach 25%, a level lethal to most marine life. Their true survival mechanism lies in their dormant eggs, or cysts. These cysts are embryos arrested in the gastrula stage of development, entering a state of suspended metabolism called cryptobiosis. This state allows them to withstand environmental conditions that seem impossible for life to endure.
The resilience of these cysts is staggering. They can survive temperatures from near absolute zero to over 100°C (212°F). The reason for this durability is a sugar called trehalose, which forms a glass-like protective matrix within the cells, preventing damage during extreme dehydration and temperature shifts. The embryo is encased in a hard, multi-layered shell called a chorion, which provides further protection. These biological time capsules can remain viable for many years, waiting for the right conditions. When spring returns to the Great Salt Lake, warming water and changing salinity trigger the cysts to rehydrate. Within hours, a larval form called a nauplius emerges and begins its life cycle.
A Keystone of the Lake
The brine shrimp is an important species in the Great Salt Lake ecosystem. The only other significant animal life is the brine fly. Brine shrimp graze on the lake's abundant phytoplankton, helping to keep the water clear. In turn, they become the primary food source for millions of migratory birds. The Great Salt Lake is an important stopover on the Pacific Flyway, and more than 10 million birds, representing over 250 species, visit annually. An estimated 95% of the entire North American population of eared grebes stops at the lake, each consuming up to 30,000 brine shrimp per day to fuel their long migration.
This tiny crustacean also supports a significant local economy. The Great Salt Lake is the world's largest single source of brine shrimp cysts, supplying about 45% of the global demand. Each fall, a fleet of boats harvests the golden slicks of cysts that accumulate on the water's surface. These harvested cysts are dried, packaged, and shipped worldwide, primarily for use as high-protein food in commercial fish and prawn aquaculture. The industry generates up to $60 million annually for Utah's economy and is managed to ensure a sustainable balance between the harvest and the needs of migratory birds.
