A berry with a history
The Korean black raspberry, Rubus coreanus, is a perennial wild berry native to Korea, Japan, and China. Known locally as Bokbunya, its fruit has been used for centuries in traditional Korean medicine. Historical applications include treatments for liver and kidney ailments. The plant belongs to the Rosaceae family, sharing a lineage with roses and other common fruits. Unlike many traditional remedies, Bokbunya has attracted significant scientific interest, leading to numerous studies investigating its chemical composition and health effects.
The major bioactive compounds in Bokbunya are polyphenols, a class of chemicals that includes flavonoids and anthocyanins. These compounds are responsible for the berry's deep, dark color. Research shows the total polyphenol, flavonoid, and anthocyanin contents of Bokbunya are significantly higher than those of other common berries like strawberries, cranberries, and even blackberries. The primary anthocyanins identified are cyanidin-3-glucoside and cyanidin-3-rutinoside. Ellagic acid is another major phenolic compound found in the fruit, recognized for its antioxidant capacity. The chemical profile changes during ripening; unripe fruits contain higher levels of phenolics and demonstrate greater antioxidant activity in laboratory tests.
