Scientific monitoring shows its final years. Repeat photography, a method that compares historical images with contemporary ones, documents a rapid retreat. The glacier's front is receding at a rate of 15 meters per year. The ice that remains is extraordinarily thin. Researchers employ Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR), a technique that sends radio waves into the ice to measure its depth, to create a profile of the glacier's structure. These surveys have revealed a maximum remaining ice thickness of just five meters. An ice body this thin is often considered stagnant, having lost the ability to flow under its own weight, a defining characteristic of a true glacier. The prognosis is clear: the Besiberri glacier is expected to disappear completely within the next decade.
The science of a disappearing world
The Besiberri Massif, where the glacier is located, is an area of high peaks, with several summits exceeding 3,000 meters. The glacier itself sits in a cirque, a bowl-shaped valley carved by ice, beneath the Besiberri del Mig peak. The retreat of the Pyrenean glaciers is primarily driven by rising regional temperatures. Since 1950, the temperature in the Pyrenees has risen by more than 1.5°C, accelerating melt rates, particularly in the 21st century.
The loss of these glaciers carries significant consequences. They are sensitive indicators of climate change, providing a clear visual record of atmospheric warming. Their meltwater also contributes to the unique hydrological systems of the high Pyrenees, feeding over 200 mountain lakes within the national park. As the ice vanishes, the local mountain ecosystems, which depend on the cold, stable environment the ice provides, will undergo a fundamental transformation. The disappearance of the Pyrenean glaciers shows what is expected in other mountain ranges, like the Alps, as global temperatures continue to rise.
