A Prehistoric Industrial Zone
In the arid Baysun-Tau mountains of southern Uzbekistan, exposed limestone formations contain seams of high-quality flint. For tens of thousands of years during the Middle Paleolithic, this specific location was a primary source of raw material for Neanderthal (Homo neanderthalensis) populations across the region. This was not a temporary camp, but a dedicated quarry and workshop site. The ground is littered with stone fragments, discarded cores, and half-finished tools, evidence of intensive production over a very long period.
The geological conditions of the Baysun-Tau provided flint that was ideal for knapping—hard and fine-grained in how it would fracture. Neanderthal toolmakers exploited these properties to produce a range of implements essential for their existence. Archaeological investigations, notably those by researchers like U. I. Islamov, have identified this area as a center of the Mousterian stone tool industry in Central Asia. The sheer volume of lithic debris indicates that groups of Neanderthals returned to this specific quarry repeatedly, passing down knowledge of its location and the skills needed to work its stone. The tools made here were for regional use; finished points and scrapers have been found at habitation sites, like the famous Teshik-Tash cave, miles away from the quarry itself.
The Art of the Levallois Technique
The flint tools produced at Baysun show a sophisticated manufacturing process known as the Levallois technique. This method, which appeared around 300,000 years ago, involves carefully preparing a block of stone, or core, before striking off a final, predetermined flake. The knapper would first shape the core's perimeter and surface, creating a distinctive domed shape like a tortoise shell. A single, precise strike at a prepared platform on the core would then detach a flake of a specific size and shape, with sharp edges all around. This was a highly efficient process that required cognitive foresight and planning.
This technique allowed Neanderthals to create standardized blanks for various tools, including triangular points, which could be hafted onto wooden shafts to make spears, and side-scrapers, used for processing animal hides and other materials. The presence of numerous Levallois cores and flakes at the Baysun quarry confirms that this was a place of primary production. Raw flint was extracted and shaped into these advanced "pre-forms," which were then easier to transport and finish elsewhere. The mastery of this technology at Baysun shows the complex skills and planning abilities of the Neanderthals who populated Central Asia between 40,000 and 100,000 years ago.
