A Valley Reshaped by Ice
Barrea Lake sits in the Upper Sangro Valley, a landscape deeply carved by Pleistocene glaciers. This area, part of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, is characterized by high mountain ridges, including Monte Marsicano (2,252 meters) and Monte Petroso (2,249 meters). During the last glacial period, ice filled this valley, acting like a bulldozer. As the glacier flowed, it scraped and plucked at the valley's limestone and dolomite bedrock, dramatically steepening the slopes. This process, known as glacial oversteepening, creates U-shaped valleys but leaves the walls at an unstable, near-vertical angle. The mountains here show clear evidence of these past glaciations, with features like glacial cirques—amphitheater-shaped basins carved by ice—visible at high elevations.
The Great Collapse
Around 15,000 years ago, as the climate warmed and the Last Glacial Period ended, the massive valley glacier began to retreat. This melting removed the immense weight of the ice that had been buttressing the unstable valley walls. Without this support, a catastrophic failure was inevitable. A massive rock avalanche collapsed from the valley side, sending millions of cubic meters of rock and debris crashing down.
This enormous landslide completely blocked the flow of the Sangro River. Water backed up behind this newly formed natural dam, slowly flooding the valley floor and creating the original, natural Lake Barrea. Evidence for this ancient event is visible in the landscape's shape but is confirmed by subsurface imaging. Geologists using seismic reflection profiles have mapped the structure of this massive landslide deposit beneath the current lake bed. These profiles reveal the chaotic mixture of rock that forms the dam and the layers of sediment that have accumulated in the lake over the subsequent millennia, recording this sudden, violent event.
From Natural Dam to Modern Reservoir
The natural, landslide-dammed lake existed for thousands of years, a permanent feature of the post-glacial landscape. Its modern form is the result of 20th-century engineering. In 1952, a concrete dam was constructed at the site of the natural landslide barrier to create a reservoir for hydroelectric power generation. This new structure raised the water level, submerging more of the valley floor and creating the lake as it appears today.
The current artificial lake has a surface area of over 300 hectares, stretches 4.5 kilometers long, and reaches a maximum depth of about 30 meters. It sits at an altitude of 980 meters above sea level. While managed for power, the lake has become an important habitat within the national park, attracting diverse wildlife and integrating into the ancient, glacially-carved scenery.
