A Hidden Scar
Beneath the flat, semi-arid steppe of eastern Kazakhstan lies a geologic feature that is invisible from the surface. The Ayagoz structure is a buried circular formation approximately 15 kilometers in diameter. Its existence was first suggested by geophysical surveys that measured subtle variations in the Earth's gravity. These surveys showed a distinct circular anomaly, a pattern consistent with the dense, uplifted rock found at the center of complex impact craters.
Unlike famous craters that are visible depressions, the Ayagoz structure is completely obscured by a thick layer of Cenozoic sediments. These younger deposits, laid down over millions of years, have perfectly preserved the feature while hiding it from view. To confirm its origin, scientists had to drill deep into the ground, penetrating the overlying rock to retrieve core samples from the anomaly itself. The investigation moved from remote sensing to direct physical evidence.
Reading the Clues
The drill cores brought up definitive proof of a hypervelocity impact. Within the rock samples, geologists identified shocked quartz crystals. Quartz is a common mineral, but shocked quartz has a unique microscopic structure characterized by planar deformation features. These parallel lines within the crystal lattice can only be formed by the immense, instantaneous pressure of an extraterrestrial object striking the Earth. Volcanic eruptions or other terrestrial geological processes do not generate the required force, so shocked quartz is a reliable indicator of an impact event.
Dating the impact has proven difficult. Analysis of the surrounding rocks suggests an age of 5 ± 3 million years. This wide range places the event anytime between the late Miocene and the middle Pliocene epochs. An age of just a few million years is very young for an impact structure of this size, making Ayagoz an object of scientific interest. The thick blanket of post-impact sediments that covers the crater bowl has made further study challenging, leaving many questions about the specific timing and effects of this ancient collision.
