The hydrology of a deathtrap
Antelope Canyon's existence is unusual. It was carved by water, and water can make it deadly, yet it sits in an arid desert environment. The danger comes from flash floods that can occur even when the sky directly above the canyon is clear. This is because the canyon acts as a natural drain for a large basin of higher-elevation land. A thunderstorm miles away can unleash a massive volume of water that funnels into the narrow passageways with little warning.
The canyon is carved from Navajo Sandstone, a geological formation dating back to the Jurassic period. This sandstone, formed from ancient compressed sand dunes, forms the canyon's smooth, flowing walls. During the summer monsoon season, intense thunderstorms can dump huge amounts of rain on the baked desert soil. The ground's low permeability causes rapid runoff, which collects in washes and accelerates as it is channeled into the slot canyon's narrow confines. The water picks up sand, rocks, and other debris, becoming a powerful erosive force that sculpts the canyon. This same force presents an extreme risk to anyone caught inside.
The 1997 disaster and its aftermath
On August 12, 1997, this remote danger happened. A thunderstorm, which some reports place about 15 miles away, dropped a large amount of rain into the canyon's drainage basin. While very little rain fell at the site itself, the runoff gathered upstream. A group of 12 tourists was inside Lower Antelope Canyon when an 11-foot-high wall of water surged through the narrow passages.
Eleven of the twelve hikers were killed. The victims included seven people from France, two from the United States, one from the United Kingdom, and one from Sweden. The sole survivor was the tour guide, who was found dazed and bruised on a ledge. The tragedy exposed the canyon's inherent risks and the inadequacy of the safety measures at the time, which included amateur-built wooden ladders that were swept away by the flood.
In response, the Navajo Nation, which manages the canyon as a tribal park, implemented sweeping changes. Public access was closed, and visits are now permitted only with an authorized tour guide. This ensures that all visitors are accompanied by someone knowledgeable about the risks and safety protocols. Modern safety systems have been installed, including securely bolted ladder systems, deployable cargo nets at the top of the canyon for escape, and NOAA Weather Radios at the fee booths to provide up-to-date alerts.
